Common questions and troubleshooting for The Labeler. Can't find what you need? Get in touch below.
Getting Started
Any Zebra printer that supports ZPL (Zebra Programming Language) and has network connectivity. This includes most Zebra desktop and industrial printers: ZD series, GK/GX series, ZT series, and others. The printer needs to be on the same network as your device.
There are a few ways:
- Print a configuration label: Hold the feed button for 2-3 seconds. The printed label shows the IP address.
- Check your router: Look at the connected devices list in your router's admin page.
- Zebra Setup Utilities: If you have Zebra's software on a computer, it can discover printers on your network.
The Labeler supports common label sizes including 2.25"x1.25", 4"x6", 4"x2", and others. You configure the label size when adding a printer, and the app automatically formats labels to fit.
Troubleshooting
Check these things:
- Same network: Your device and printer must be on the same Wi-Fi network. Some networks isolate devices from each other (common in offices and hotels).
- Correct IP: Verify the printer's IP address hasn't changed. Routers sometimes reassign IPs after a restart.
- Printer is on: Make sure the printer is powered on and not in an error state (check for blinking lights).
- Port 9100: The Labeler uses TCP port 9100. Some firewalls block this. Try temporarily disabling any firewall software.
This usually means the label size in the app doesn't match your actual labels:
- Go to Settings and check the printer's label size
- Measure your physical labels (width x height)
- Update the size in the app to match
If the label is printing too light or too dark, that's a printer calibration issue. Run a calibration from the printer itself (usually by holding the feed button, check your printer's manual).
The Labeler needs microphone permission to use voice input:
- Open Settings on your device
- Find The Labeler in the app list
- Enable Microphone access
Voice input is available on iOS. On Mac, use keyboard input instead.
The on-device AI interprets your description and decides what to include. A few tips:
- Be specific: "Chicken stock, made today, freeze by March 1" works better than "chicken"
- Include what matters: dates, quantities, locations, warnings
- Review the preview before printing
The AI improves with Apple's system updates. Make sure your device is running the latest iOS/macOS.
Device Requirements
The Labeler requires:
- iPhone/iPad: iOS 26 or later
- Mac: macOS Tahoe or later
These versions are required for Apple's on-device Foundation Models, which power the AI label generation.
Mostly yes. The AI processing happens entirely on your device, no internet required. You only need network access to reach your printer (which is local) and for the anonymous print counter (which is optional and fails silently if offline).
